  • A had a customer call  recently that didn’t like that AutoCAD displayed a tooltip when drawing a line with ORTHO on (see below)

    Tooltip_screen

    To turn this off:

Go into OPTIONS. Pick the Drafting tab and uncheck the box on the right that says "Display AutoTrack Tooltip"

  • Are you having trouble with re-installing or removing AutoCAD? Do you get an error message such as Unable to Install – please remove earlier version?

These can be ugly, but following Autodesk's Support Pages for help on this subject may solve the problem for you.

If those suggestions fail, and you are unable to remove a program through the Add/Remove Programs or by following Autodesk's instructions, then it's time to bring out the big guns.

Microsoft has a special Windows Installer CleanUp Utility that will basically remove (rip out) any program found in the Add/Remove Programs window. It is a graphic-based utility that is easy to use. Please note that after the obligatory caution screen that this utility will proceed to take the selected program off your computer without any more warnings. It is quite effective.

  • Need a handy tool for editing attributes within all blocks at the same time? AutoCAD has a great tool built right in – BATTMAN

You can get at all the defined blocks in the drawing that have
attributes, and you can get at all the atts within a block. You can
change all kinds of things about those atts as well.

PS – This can also be found on the Modify menu: Object
» Attribute » Block Attribute Manager and the Modify II toolbar

  • Yep. It’s Springtime again.

  • I just had a customer who noticed that when he went to a Layout tab that all of his objects were gray. AutoCAD was apparently applying his Plot Style (Hydragray) to the objects in the Layout (and no, he wasn’t doing a Plot Preview). What to do?

Apparently (after much Googling) there is an option in AutoCAD to do just that:

    1. Right-Click on the Layout Tab in question
    2. Pick Page Setup Manager
    3. Click on the Current Page Setup in question and pick Modify
    4. On the upper right in the section titled: Plot style table (pen assignments) you will find an option: Display plot styles. Uncheck that if you want the Layout objects to be displayed just as you see them in Model Space or check it if you want the plot style applied to the Layout. Note that this does not affect how the Layout is plotted!

  • I was visiting a new customer in New York City earlier this month, and this is what was in the design manager’s office:

    20080110hydratec_200

    .
Yep – that is four monitors, all hooked up to the same machine via one video card. I had HydraCALC, HydraLIST, HydraCAD and 3D fittings all up on different screens. It was one large desktop that I had to navigate from left to right to get to all the screens.

    I want this

  • More and more often we are hearing from customers that cannot submit a drawing file that uses ‘foreign’ fonts, just those that AutoCAD ships with. We added an option in the HydraCAD updates from a few months ago that can fix this for you.

Pick HcadTool->Modify->Attribute->Expand Fractions or type in EXF

This will start a command which will turn the text in all HydraCAD items into a standard AutoCAD font (romans). It will also expand the fractions (the only special keys we have defined in our font styles) into regular text

After you have one this, you can go into the AutoCAD STYLE command and pick whatever font you like

  • This from Tuesday’s Dow Jones’ Market Watch website:

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Are you in the habit of choosing the
"remember my password" option when signing into online accounts?
Storing passwords can be a useful tool for those of us without perfect
recall. The trouble is, eventually your computer will prompt you to
re-enter the information and (if you’re anything like me) by the time
that happens, the password will have become a distant memory.

Luckily, now there are programs designed to decode all
those indecipherable asterisks. The personal finance Web site Sound
Money Tips suggests three programs for under $20 that help PC users
    retrieve forgotten passwords:

    1. Revelation 2.0. A downloadable application for Windows machines that allows users to convert asterisks back into real text. Get it at: http://www.snadboy.com. Cost: The program is free, but donations are appreciated.
    2. Aqua Deskexperience 1.3.
Like Revelation 2.0, this application is designed to help retrieve
forgotten passwords. However it also has several others features,
including password protection and advanced screen capture and text
extraction capabilities. Unfortunately, Aqua Deskexperience 1.3 only
works on computers with Windows 2000, XP and 2003. Get it at: http://www.deskperience.com/aqua/password-revealer.html. Cost: Under $15.

    3. Password Revealer.
Created by Paqtool, this password retriever is free to try, but you’ll
have to cough up some cash to keep using it after the trial period
ends. Password Revealer works on machines with Windows 95, 98, ME, NY
and XP. Get it at: http://www.newfreedownloads.com/Windows-Utilities/System-Utilities/Password-Revealer.html

      Cost: Under $20.

  • From a question posed by a customer:

    Question: Is
there a way to lock and password protect drawing layers so I can email them to
someone and them not be able to change the drawing. Also is there a easy and
preferably “free” way to make a drawing into a pdf. I use primopdf for making
calcs or lists into pdf’s but I haven’t figured a way to make a large document
    sheet pdf with that program.

    Answer: In AutoCAD 2007
and newer you can Plot to a PDF in the plot command, Choose the DWG to PDF
    driver

Answer #2: The best way to
protect layers is to print a DWF of the drawing. You can then choose what abilities to edit the user has.

  • Ever need to the layer of all the attributes inside a

    Try:

MODIFY >  OBJECT > Attribute > Block Attribute
Manager > select the block > EDIT >  Go to the PROPERTIES Tab
    >

Change the layer name > OK > APPLY

Thanks to Robert at Northstar for this one

Also, If you need to change the color, height or style try our Change Attribute Properties command (CAP at the command line)
